I smile a lot.
People ask me why.
I ask why a smile needs to have a motive behind it.
People become confused.
What a world!

Essential 2nd Grade Stuff!

adiemtocarpe:

My brain is 100% upper-elementary.

What are some key things for 2nd grade?

Advice - fun lessons - things to buy - classroom display - ANYTHING!

I’m traditionally an upper-primary teacher in Australia, and I’ve started teaching a class of Receptions/Year 1s… The key to getting it right is BEING EXPLICIT ABOUT EVERYTHING. Practise lining up, practise sitting on the floor, listening skills … when I mean everything, I mean EVERYTHING.

Create a team environment by having a class reward system (if the whole class does the right thing, they get stickers/stamps/spots, and when they get a number of spots, they get a class reward - pizza party anyone?) and individual rewards system.

Maths manipulatives, counting sticks/blocks/ etc… I have laminated some 100s charts, counting sheets, and also have some clear whiteboards to put worksheets in, so that they can use whiteboard markers and rub out their mistakes. I also use them with handwriting sheets :)

Above all, don’t lower your standards. Expect good work, expect achievement, and reward those who write neatly, try hard, and participate. :)

Year 1’s: They can’t spell “thought”.

"I was a Harry Potter nerd. Pencils were wands. I was going to Hogwarts. The whole thing. You don’t understand what a nerd I am. I mean, if they remade them, I’d still go. Like, I’ve seen all of [the originals], and that’s always going to be Harry. That’s always going to be Ron and Hermione. But if they did it again, I absolutely would go, because I want to see it all again."
